In search of red rhubarb
Our rhubarb patch is about a tenth of an acre. Nobody has counted exactly, but there are over 500 plants. Plenty for a big game of rhubarb hide-and-seek, and plenty to offer in our Early and Late Season CSA boxes.
The “Uncle Ralph’s” variety that we grow, though, is mostly green, even when the stalks are ripe. It has the same delightful tang as traditional red rhubarb, but lacks the bright color. This wouldn’t be an issue except that we want to be able to offer red rhubarb to our restaurant and grocery partners, for whom food presentation makes all the difference.
We’ve cleared some space near our rhubarb patch and are going to trial a new variety called Crimson Red. You’ll get to try our Uncle Ralph’s rhubarb soon!
